Swimming Bears
September 24 , 2008

Of all the safety concerns I have had regarding fishing, especially from a boat- worrying about a bear jumping in the boat and mauling me never even made the bottom of the list. It’s not anywhere even near the list.
But that’s exactly what happened to an unnamed man in ’s
British Columbia province. The unidentified man survived, and is currently recovering at a local hospital.
Conservation officer Gord Hitchcock said Wednesday the 52-year-old man was fishing at a marina in a tiny coastal community off 's Pacific coast when the bear mauled him. According to witnesses, the bear swam across a river, climbed onto a dock, and then jumped onto the man’s boat and started the attack.
Fortunately for our fisherman, onlookers did not stare dumbfounded, and once they realized what was happening acted quickly, by using convenient weapons such as hooked poles, knives and a hammer to pull the bear off of him. The bear was killed during the counter attack.
Fire Chief Dan Tennant said he's never heard of such an incident in an area where the bears are normally docile.
So, be watchful for bears. Even when on the water.
