Having previously had all their steamships built in England, as did most German shipowners in the 19th century, five Flensburger shipowners made the bold move of starting their own shipbuilding company. The company was founded in 1872, and they named it the
FLENSBURGER SCHIFFBAU-GESELLSCHAFT.
The first newbuilding, the iron tallship 'Doris Brodersen', was delivered to one of the founding partners in 1875. The cargo steamer 'Septima' was commissioned a year later.
