Yacht Aid Global
July 21 , 2008
Super yachts are seldom seen as charitable envoys. But a San Diego organization called YachtAid Global is changing that perception by arranging the delivery by yacht of free school supplies to coastal communities in , Central America and
South America . The organization is expanding to port communities world wide. The communities to which school supplies are delivered accommodate yachts that call for various reasons such as guest and owner pickup and drop off, layovers, refueling and reprovisioning. The ultimate objective of these charitable efforts is preservation of the near shore ocean environment via education of the local kids.

Organization YachtAid Global engages yacht captains, crews and owners to participate in its program through donations and/or transport of school supplies, as well as volunteering their time in country. Purchases are funded by a
San Diego yacht-service company, C2C Inc., founded by the Executive Director of YachtAid Global. www.c2conline.net Additional financial support is being solicited among companies that serve the yachting industry as well as from yacht owners. The group’s first corporate donor is Frankentek Yacht Systems, LLC of Medford, New Jersey, designer and installer of highly sophisticated electronic security systems for super yachts. www.frankentek.com More yachts are being recruited to join the half dozen already involved in the program.
Operations Goods for donation are sourced and purchased by YachtAid Global from their headquarters in
San Diego . A shipment destined for delivery by yacht will typically include dry erase markers and boards, blunt scissors, color pencils, poster board, rulers, crayons, construction paper and pencils. Yachts delivering supplies work with local agents who arrange unloading and delivery to selected schools. Local agents are hand picked by YachtAid. YachtAid Global is exploring joint-venture opportunities with other charitable organizations worldwide. The organization’s slogan is “Changing the world without changing course: volunteer—donate—transport.”

Ports of Call The communities whose schools are assisted by YachtAid Global are ports that have long been hospitable to the Super Yacht Fleet. They include Belize City, in , and ’s San Blas Islands. There are also many other ports throughout , , and that are setup to receive assistance.
History YachtAid Global was founded in 2006 by Captain Mark Drewelow, a veteran of 20 years of yachting experience with a ¼ million world wide miles at sea. Captain Drewelow also founded C2C, Inc., a yacht-service firm in
San Diego , in 2003. Currently the principal benefactor of YachtAid Global, C2C’s business includes turn key streamlined solutions for the large yachts such as fuel brokering, supplying books and charts, provisioning, crew placement, voyage planning, dockage and yacht management.

Miscellany YachtAid Global is also active in environmental conservation, cooperating with The Reef Check Foundation by distributing literature —including a booklet for children — about coral reef preservation.
YachtAid Global is currently seeking yacht operations planning cruises to Mexico, Belize and other countries in Central America. For more information visit the YachtAid Global Website, www.yachtaidglobal.org

Roaring Rapids
July 21 , 2008
The roar of the rapids! The thrill of cascading waterfalls! If you have not tried it yet, Whitewater rafting is an exciting way to see the great outdoors. A challenging (but fun) way to test your strength, endurance, reflex time and ability to think on your feet, it also gives you a great excuse to have a cold one with friends afterwards! Here are four of the top rated places to go whitewater rafting. Even if you have never gone before, experienced guides can take you down ‘tamer’ courses to ‘get your feet wet’ so to speak! Most of these places offer multiple day excursions, so you may be gone for 3-7 days on your rafting adventure! Most often, trips like these are for experienced rafters, but even novices can usually find a package offered at one of the local rafting companies to suit their needs!
Whitewater Rafting
The
Colorado River
In the grandest canyons of the Colorado, rafting through the
Grand Canyon , you can experience the excitement and beauty of the river as it transforms from mild to thrill seeking fun! The
Grand Canyon is ever-changing, with massive walls that step back to expose eons of natural history, at one place dark and narrow, and at another lush with waterfalls thundering hundreds of feet in luminous free fall. With lots of various courses, ranging from beginner to expert thrill seeker, its easy to find a course that matches your skill level!
Rogue River in Oregon
The wild Rogue River is one of the most dramatic rivers in the , and for that reason is a favorite of river runners worldwide. Since it is protected under the Wild and Scenic Rivers Act of Congress, whitewater rafting enthusiasts are guaranteed an uncrowned, pristine environment restricted from the encroachment of civilization.
Salmon Fork,
Salmon River, Idaho
The Middle Fork of the
Salmon River is White Water Rafting paradise! This free-flowing river drops 3000 feet through the remote and spectacular
River of
No Return Wilderness.
West Virginia
Multiple places throughout the state offer guided and self guided rafting expeditions. It's not uncommon for flows to quadruple scheduled fall releases during the spring making for a heart pounding river adventure. In the summer, water flows reach very precise levels making those world-class drops even steeper and more technical to run. Spring or fall, the Summersville Dam releases cool clear water from the bottom of
Summersville
Lake for invigorating whitewater experiences all year long!

Drilling off the Atlantic
July 21 , 2008
We are all familiar with the oil drilling stations in the Gulf of Mexico, primarily located close to Texas and Louisiana, but with gas prices soaring to $4 a gallon, some are calling for lifting the moratorium on Atlantic (and Pacific) offshore oil drilling.
Ocean Odyssey - Oil Exploration & Production
Everyone has an opinion. Proponents say it would allow the to become more self-sufficient; opponents worry about ecological impacts. Even if the law is passed, states could veto it, so states such as Maryland – who is opposed to offshore oil drilling, could maintain that status, while states such as Virginia and
North Carolina; who are in favor,
could allow it.
If the law were to pass, it would also allow drilling in an
Alaska
wildlife refuge that environmentalists have fought successfully for decades to protect.
High crude oil and gasoline prices are affecting everything from food costs and summer vacations to the ability for volunteers to provide food to the homebound elderly.
That has prompted Republican demands for more domestic oil and natural gas production even in areas off limits for environmental reasons, even though it would take a decade or longer to see results.
Nearly half the people surveyed by the
Pew
Research
Center
in late June said they now consider energy exploration and drilling more important than conservation, compared with a little over a third who felt that way only five months ago.
Environmentalists argue that oil companies are not going after the oil in nearly 68 million acres of federal land and waters where oil and gas companies hold leases but are not producing oil.
The Interior Department estimates 18 billion barrels of oil is likely beneath coastal waters now off limits, or about 50% more than has been pumped from the oil fields on Alaska's North Slope since 1977.
Regardless of your opinion on the matter, it is obvious that we have to do something. Whether it’s focusing on alternate methods of energy production, or allowing offshore drilling. Let’s hear your thoughts, you can post your comments below.
That’s an energy wrap!
