Drilling off the Atlantic
July 21 , 2008
We are all familiar with the oil drilling stations in the Gulf of Mexico, primarily located close to Texas and Louisiana, but with gas prices soaring to $4 a gallon, some are calling for lifting the moratorium on Atlantic (and Pacific) offshore oil drilling.
Ocean Odyssey - Oil Exploration & Production
Everyone has an opinion. Proponents say it would allow the to become more self-sufficient; opponents worry about ecological impacts. Even if the law is passed, states could veto it, so states such as Maryland – who is opposed to offshore oil drilling, could maintain that status, while states such as Virginia and
North Carolina; who are in favor,
could allow it.
If the law were to pass, it would also allow drilling in an
Alaska
wildlife refuge that environmentalists have fought successfully for decades to protect.
High crude oil and gasoline prices are affecting everything from food costs and summer vacations to the ability for volunteers to provide food to the homebound elderly.
That has prompted Republican demands for more domestic oil and natural gas production even in areas off limits for environmental reasons, even though it would take a decade or longer to see results.
Nearly half the people surveyed by the
Pew
Research
Center
in late June said they now consider energy exploration and drilling more important than conservation, compared with a little over a third who felt that way only five months ago.
Environmentalists argue that oil companies are not going after the oil in nearly 68 million acres of federal land and waters where oil and gas companies hold leases but are not producing oil.
The Interior Department estimates 18 billion barrels of oil is likely beneath coastal waters now off limits, or about 50% more than has been pumped from the oil fields on Alaska's North Slope since 1977.
Regardless of your opinion on the matter, it is obvious that we have to do something. Whether it’s focusing on alternate methods of energy production, or allowing offshore drilling. Let’s hear your thoughts, you can post your comments below.
That’s an energy wrap!

Sand Sculpture Competition
July 16 , 2008
The place to be in August is at the Parksville, BC Beachfest- highlighted by one of the most fantastic sand sculpting competitions in the world!
Sand Castle Extraordinaire
Sculptors from all over the world travel to Parksville to participate in the Canadian Open Sand Sculpting Competition, which will be held August 8 - 10, 2008, with the exhibit being open to the public until September 1.
The Sand Sculpting Competition dates back to 1982, when a total of 100 people attended the first event, and it was reviewed as a "great success". Today, the event has evolved into a world class Master Class competition. In the last six years, Parksville has welcomed over 427,601 visitors to our Sand Sculpting Exhibition.
Visitors arrive from everywhere in the world to marvel at these unbelievable feats of artistry, creativity and engineering. The competition is open to professional and master level sculptors, and artists from around the world come to participate! And with prizes ranging up to $7,000, who can blame them? The competition itself lasts for 23 hours over 3 days. During construction of the sculptures, you can view the even through the fence, and on August 10th, the gates are opened for the public to look closer! The sculptures remain in place for three weeks following the competition. Technically admission is free, however, a small donation of $2 per person is appreciated!
There’s more than sand during Beachfest – there’s a Fireworks Display on August 16th and Kidfest on August 17th with entertainment and kids' sandcastle event, beach volleyball & croquet tournaments, just to name a few. The beach itself offers a beautiful view with its long sandy beaches and eastern exposure; this is an ideal spot to spend time with friends and family!

The Future
July 15 , 2008
Some people think about the future, some people want to know the future and then there are those who invent the future. Yep that’s right, invent the future!
So you are probably wondering what we're talking about. We’re talking about world renowned designer, Tim Heywood and his psychic abilities to create beautiful vessels and invent the future. Besides designing some of the greatest looking yachts known to conquer the high seas, he has another hidden talent many do not know about.

In 2001 Mr. Heywood produced the above pre-contract rendering of a very special yacht for a very special client. The client wanted something unique and recognized around the world for her name and style. The rendering displayed the yacht sitting off of Venice and suffice to say, the owners fell in love with the presentation. The yacht we speak of was soon under construction at the Austal Shipyard located in Australia and was soon known as the newest Perfect Prescription, now Fortunate Sun.

It took 7 years, but as you can see from the images here, My Heywood can and has invented the future!
We would like to thank the Crew of Fortunate Sun and Tim Heywood Designs for supplying these fantastic images! Alone they are great images, but together they are priceless.
Do you have great shots of yachts anchored off an amazing or special backdrop? Upload them today and share them with the SplashVision Community!
