Race to Mackinac
June 19 , 2008
Race to the Mackinac!
Sailors up north are getting ready! Two of the largest and most famous freshwater races are in final preparations to set sail! The
Port Huron to Mackinac and Chicago to Mackinac races are both fun, both famous, and are only a week apart! But for all their similarities, the two races are not the same, although they are often confused!
Port Huron to Mackinac The Port Huron to Mackinac feet, which as of last week stands at 238 boats is scheduled to set sail July 12 from lower
Lake Huron .. This makes the 84th annual Bay view Yacht Club
Port Huron to Mackinac Race. The City of
Port Huron is once again the host for all race activities and the downtown waterfront is excitedly preparing for the ships, sailors, and sailing fans! The race will go on the same course as last year, which rounds the NOAA weather buoy 43 miles northeast of Alpena, Michigan and will continue to the finish at
Mackinac Island . In addition to the race itself,
Port Huron events include Family Night (Thursday) and Boat Night (Friday). The race, which has drawn as many as 275 boats through its existence, is expected to attract 250 entries. Registrations were at 238 last Wednesday with about a month to go. The entries for the Port Huron race have been down during the years, especially when it comes before the
Chicago to Mackinac Race. While the race itself is shorter, only 238 miles, fans always seem to prefer this race, and its participation levels rival the larger, and more famous,
Chicago race.
Chicago to Mackinac Speaking of the Chicago Mackinac race, the 333 statute miles (289.4 nautical miles for our sailing friends) runs from Chicago, and starts just off Navy Pier on July 19, and completes at
Mackinac Island, Michigan . It is the longest annual freshwater sailing distance race in the World. The first Mac Race was held in 1898 as an informal race of 5 boats. Vanenna won in 51 hours. 2008 marks the 100th anniversary of the Chicago Mackinac race! Typically, 300 boats and 3,000 crewmembers participate in the Race to Mackinac. Participation is by invitation from the Chicago Yacht Club. 2008 marks a record number of entrants at 460 boats.
If you are going to be in the area, or if you are one of the lucky participants, make sure to take video and upload it to share with the SplashVision Community!
That’s a wrap!

The Whale
June 19 , 2008
The Whale
A female humpback whale had become entangled in a spider web of crab traps and lines. She was weighted down by hundreds of pounds of traps that caused her to struggle to stay afloat. She also had hundreds of yards of line rope wrapped around her body, her tail, her torso and a line tugging in her mouth.

A fisherman spotted her just east of the
Faralon
Islands (outside the
Golden Gate ) and radioed for help. Within a few hours, the rescue team arrived and determined that she was so bad off, the only way to save her was to dive in and untangle her...a very dangerous proposition. One slap of the tail could kill a rescuer.
They worked for hours with curved knives and eventually freed her. When she was free, the divers say she swam in what seemed like joyous circles. She then came back to each and every diver, one at a time, nudged them, and pushed gently, thanking them.

Some said it was the most incredibly beautiful experience of their lives. The guy who cut the rope out of her mouth says her eye was following him the whole time, and he will never be the same.
May you, and all those you love, be so fortunate...to be surrounded by people who will help you get untangled from the things that are binding you. And, may you always know the joy of giving and receiving gratitude.
We pass this on to you in the same spirit; our friends of the SplashVision community.

Nood Regatta
June 16 , 2008
Boston
NOOD Regatta
Nood Regatta
If you are planning on being in
Boston
During July 24th-27th, than the Corinthian Yacht Club is the place to be! That’s when the 2008 Boston NOOD regatta takes place!
So…what’s a NOOD regatta? A play on words for nudist yachters? No, not hardly. NOOD stands for ‘ National Offshore One Design’ and was coined in 1998 by Sailing World Magazine. Sailing World had decided to sponsor a series of Regattas. And with locations such as St.Petersburg, San Diego, Detroit, Chicago,
Boston
and more, it was an instant hit!
Each year, the NOOD regattas attract nearly to 2,000 boats, 30,000 competitors and even more spectators! Each regatta is held in a three-day series of sailboat racing. The boats must be 20-70 feet in lengths and be a one-design model. The regattas attract local sailors, of course, but the elite of the sailing world also participate from Olympic and ’s Cup champions!
Whether you decide to participate in the regatta or simply cheer on your favorite boat, there more to the weekend to do as well! Throughout the city, and especially on the waterfront local business and companies celebrate the regatta in grand style! Spectator’s cheer on their favorite boats and crewmembers and captains are treated to near celebrity status!
Are you going to be at one of the NOOD regattas? Did you participate? Upload your videos and photos to SplashVision today and share your experience with the world!
That’s a wrap!
