First Storm of 2008 Kills

Floods kill five in Belize
Tropical Rain From Arthur First Storm of 2008
Flash floods caused by tropical storm Arthur have killed at least five people in southeastern Belize, including a toddler, the government of the tiny Central American country said.
Arthur, the first storm of the year in the Atlantic, dumped over 28cm of rain across Belize this week as it moved inland, also drenching southern Mexican states.
The body of a 2-year-old boy was found on Tuesday evening. His father had struggled for half an hour in turbulent floodwaters before the infant was washed away.
Two people from the southeastern district of Stann Creek were still missing on Wednesday. Belize, wedged between Mexico and Guatemala with a population of just 300,000, is best known for its laid-back atmosphere, palm-fringed islands and coral reefs.
Torrential rains from Arthur – which have also left swathes of southern Mexico waterlogged – swelled rivers in Belize and wiped away two bridges in the south, severing key transport arteries for Belize's farming and fishing industries.
"This was really a kind of freak occurrence that with the best will in the world, and all the resources in the world, we could not have anticipated," Prime Minister Dean Barrow, who became Belize's first black leader on taking office in February, said this week.
Authorities estimated that 13,000 people across the country were affected by Arthur.

Attack South of the Border

Shark Attacks in Aculpulco
Shark Attack in Aculpulco
Surfers may want to stay out of the water in Aculpulco.
A San Francisco man died after a shark attacked him while he was surfing off 's southern Pacific coast. This is the third attack in a month.
The man was identified by Mexican authorities as Adrian Ruiz, age 24. Ruiz bled to death on Monday after a tiger shark bit his right thigh, leaving a 15-inch wound.
The attack occurred at the Troncones beach, about 45 minutes west of the beach resort Ixtapa.
A day earlier, a 21-year-old Mexican surfer was killed by a shark off a nearby beach. The two attacks came a month after a shark killed a
San Francisco
man surfing in the same area. Another unnamed American was also attacked today and lost his thumb but did manage to get to a hospital on his own and is in stable condition.
Authorities have not closed beaches in Zihuatanejo, but people are being advised against swimming.
Historically, shark attacks are relatively rare in .
Mexican authorities used baited hooks to catch sharks after the attack that killed 24-year-old Adrian Ruiz. Local conservationists protested the hunt, and it was not immediately clear if authorities would do it again. Conservationists have recommended the temporary closing of beaches in Zihuatanejo rather than killing sharks. They have also called for aerial surveys to determine what species has been attacking surfers.
For the meantime however, signs have been posted advising surfers to surf at their own risk.
Be careful out there, my surfing friends!
