The aircraft carrier Kitty Hawk, the oldest active ship in the Navy, has made its final departure from
to be decommissioned after nearly fifty years of service.
Seeing as I am originally from
Kitty Hawk, NC- the ships namesake, I am particularly fond of her!
As sailors lined its decks, the cheers of hundreds of school children and the sounds of brass bands bid a fond farewell to The Kitty Hawk as it left the Yokosuka port just south of
Tokyo .
It flew the “Don’t Tread on Me” flag, which designates it as the oldest ship in the Navy.
The
Kitty Hawk , the last conventionally powered aircraft carrier in the Navy, is to be replaced later this summer by the nuclear-powered carrier George Washington.
After leaving , the Kitty Hawk will make a stop at Pearl Harbor, Hawaii, and then travel on to the Puget Sound Naval Shipyard in
Bremerton, Wash. , to be decommissioned.
The ship, commissioned in 1961, was assigned to in 1998. It has since made 20 deployments in the western Pacific and participated in Operation Enduring Freedom in .

Miami Boat Show Convention Center
The 2008 South Florida Boat show is coming in a couple of weeks- just as the summer boating season is swinging into high gear!
This is the largest summer boat show in the south eastern United States, and is well worth the $10 admission price (or $5 if you are a little one!). Even better, is that vendors have stated that this show promises the lowest boat prices of the season! And considering the price of gas, well…that’s a good thing! It’s also a great time to get a new boat before the 2009 models come out with their higher price tags!
Powerboats and personal watercraft and tenders will be featured in price ranges from $5000 to upwards of $250,000! Other vendors will feature nautical accessories and decorations, engines, lifts, fishing gear, diving gear and accessories, marine electronics and much more!
Each day will offer special free features such as boating, fishing and diving seminars. Door and vendor prizes will also be awarded!

Fleet Week New York 2008
With Memorial Day weekend upon us, The 21st Fleet Week celebration in
New York City
began May 21, with the traditional Parade of Ships.
The five U.S. Navy ships participating in the Fleet Week commemoration are the amphibious assault ship USS Kearsarge, guided-missile cruisers USS Leyte Gulf and USS Monterey , and the guided-missile destroyers USS The Sullivans and USS Nitze.
A U.S. Coast Guard cutter and three Canadian navy vessels joined the U.S. Navy ships at the Parade of Ships and will also be participating in Fleet Week events.
Hosted nearly every year since 1984, Fleet Week New York is the city's celebration of the sea services. This event also provides an opportunity for the citizens of
New York City
and the surrounding area to meet Sailors, Marines and Coast Guardsmen, as well as see, first-hand, the latest capabilities of today's maritime services.
While in New York, nearly 4,000 Sailors, Marines and Coast Guardsmen will participate in Memorial Day parades in all five boroughs; volunteer with local community outreach organizations; and experience the sights, sounds and hospitality of
New York City
.
If you are in the area, it is a great way to celebrate Memorial Day, by honoring those who are serving, and remembering those who lost their lives. Public visitations of the U.S. Navy ships will begin May 22 and finish May 27. There will be a number of exhibits showing off the technology of our maritime services and the skilled expertise of service members.
