Miami Summer Boat Show
May 27 , 2008

2008 South Florida Boat Show

Miami Boat Show Convention Center

The 2008 South Florida Boat show is coming in a couple of weeks- just as the summer boating season is swinging into high gear!

This is the largest summer boat show in the south eastern United States, and is well worth the $10 admission price (or $5 if you are a little one!). Even better, is that vendors have stated that this show promises the lowest boat prices of the season! And considering the price of gas, well…that’s a good thing! It’s also a great time to get a new boat before the 2009 models come out with their higher price tags!

Powerboats and personal watercraft and tenders will be featured in price ranges from $5000 to upwards of $250,000! Other vendors will feature nautical accessories and decorations, engines, lifts, fishing gear, diving gear and accessories, marine electronics and much more!

Each day will offer special free features such as boating, fishing and diving seminars. Door and vendor prizes will also be awarded!

2008 Show Dates:
Miami Beach Convention Center
Friday, June 13, 2008 through Monday, June 16, 2008

Swing by the show and take some video and photos of your favorite vendors, the special features or the great deal you snagged on something! Then upload it to SplashVision and share with the community!

See you there!

New York Fleet Week
May 23 , 2008

Fleet Week in NY!

Fleet Week New York 2008

With Memorial Day weekend upon us, The 21st Fleet Week celebration in New York City began May 21, with the traditional Parade of Ships.

The five U.S. Navy ships participating in the Fleet Week commemoration are the amphibious assault ship USS Kearsarge, guided-missile cruisers USS Leyte Gulf and USS Monterey , and the guided-missile destroyers USS The Sullivans and USS Nitze.

A U.S. Coast Guard cutter and three Canadian navy vessels joined the U.S. Navy ships at the Parade of Ships and will also be participating in Fleet Week events.

Hosted nearly every year since 1984, Fleet Week New York is the city's celebration of the sea services. This event also provides an opportunity for the citizens of New York City and the surrounding area to meet Sailors, Marines and Coast Guardsmen, as well as see, first-hand, the latest capabilities of today's maritime services.

While in New York, nearly 4,000 Sailors, Marines and Coast Guardsmen will participate in Memorial Day parades in all five boroughs; volunteer with local community outreach organizations; and experience the sights, sounds and hospitality of New York City .

If you are in the area, it is a great way to celebrate Memorial Day, by honoring those who are serving, and remembering those who lost their lives. Public visitations of the U.S. Navy ships will begin May 22 and finish May 27. There will be a number of exhibits showing off the technology of our maritime services and the skilled expertise of service members.

Celebrate Memorial Day and Fleet week in the true honor that it deserves! Upload your fleet week videos and photos to SplashVision today!

That’s a wrap!

Octopus or Hexapus
May 23 , 2008

Henry the Hexapus

We all know Octopus’ – or is that octopi?- have eight legs. But Henry seems to have missed that memo from our childhood science classes!

In Northwest England, hidden away in the Blackpool Sea Life Center , lives Henry, the ‘hexapus’. Staffers believe his missing limbs are due to a birth defect- which would explain why he hasn’t grown them back, as is typical to octopus.

"If you look closer between the legs, there's webbing that attaches each of the arms together," John Filmer of the Sea Life Centre stated "You'd assume if he'd lost one of his legs in an accident, there would be space for an arm to grow back.

"But there's no space for two extra legs to grow back. That's just how he is."

Henry was acquired by the Sea Life center from a local zoo when they were preparing the new exhibit. No one noticed the missing limbs until much later at his new home, when he attached himself to the sides of his tank.

Staffers called others zoos and aquariums and scoured the Internet to see if there were records of similar creatures.

"No one has ever heard of another case of a six-legged octopus," said display supervisor Carey Duckhouse.

So why did they choose the name ‘Henry’? Although the true reason is kept under wraps, two distinct possibilities float around- it sounds good with ‘hexapus’- you know zoogoers love a good alliteration, or, for the history buffs among us, he could be named after King Henry the VIII who had six wives when he should have had eight.

Until Henry, the most famous six-legged octopus was one that appeared in the 1955 movie, 'It Came From Beneath The Sea.’ Only the monster from the deep had 6 legs because the budget could not cover 8.

Do you have amazing footage of an unusual sea creature? Upload it to SplashVision today!

That’s a wrap!
