Octopus or Hexapus
May 23 , 2008

Henry the Hexapus

We all know Octopus’ – or is that octopi?- have eight legs. But Henry seems to have missed that memo from our childhood science classes!

In Northwest England, hidden away in the Blackpool Sea Life Center , lives Henry, the ‘hexapus’. Staffers believe his missing limbs are due to a birth defect- which would explain why he hasn’t grown them back, as is typical to octopus.

"If you look closer between the legs, there's webbing that attaches each of the arms together," John Filmer of the Sea Life Centre stated "You'd assume if he'd lost one of his legs in an accident, there would be space for an arm to grow back.

"But there's no space for two extra legs to grow back. That's just how he is."

Henry was acquired by the Sea Life center from a local zoo when they were preparing the new exhibit. No one noticed the missing limbs until much later at his new home, when he attached himself to the sides of his tank.

Staffers called others zoos and aquariums and scoured the Internet to see if there were records of similar creatures.

"No one has ever heard of another case of a six-legged octopus," said display supervisor Carey Duckhouse.

So why did they choose the name ‘Henry’? Although the true reason is kept under wraps, two distinct possibilities float around- it sounds good with ‘hexapus’- you know zoogoers love a good alliteration, or, for the history buffs among us, he could be named after King Henry the VIII who had six wives when he should have had eight.

Until Henry, the most famous six-legged octopus was one that appeared in the 1955 movie, 'It Came From Beneath The Sea.’ Only the monster from the deep had 6 legs because the budget could not cover 8.

Safe Boating Reminder

Boating Safety Re-Cap

Now folks- listen up, and listen good…I love the water as much as you-fishing, swimming, surfing- you name it, I’m game! But boating safety is NOT a game!

On this past Mother’s Day, nine people were thrown into the Tampa Bay after their boat hit a wave. The scariest part; an infant and young child were two of the ones thrown from the boat. Even worse; NO ONE- including the babies- was wearing life jackets!

I have two kids- and they have been in the water and boats since they were teeny tiny. But NEVER have they been aboard a boat, or even out on a pier- without a life jacket! You never, ever know what is going to happen!

Please, remember basic boating safety. Everyone wears life jackets on our boat. Just like in my car, we don’t depart until seatbelts are on- in the boat, we don’t take off until life jackets are on!

Fortunately, all those thrown aboard were rescued safely. But this story could have had such a tragic ending, its not even funny. Go out, have fun, but above all- BE SAFE!

Basic Boating rules that should be on every vessel?

EVERYONE wears lifejackets!

Check the weather before departure-if storms are in the area, or nearby, delay your trip!

Keep an emergency radio on board!

I’m getting off my soapbox now. Go out this weekend- its going to be beautiful! Have a good, safe time and enjoy the sun! I know we will!

That’s a wrap!
