Top 3 Florida Beaches for Scuba and Snorkel
Coral Reef Park - John Pennekamp Florida
As summer beach season starts to gear up for another busy year, you may find yourself overwhelmed with the myriad of beaches for fun! While the definition of ‘fun’ can be completely individual, I have compiled a list of my top three
Florida beaches for scuba and snorkeling!
Dubbed as the first underwater park in Florida
, the John Pennekamp Coral Reef is a divers dream! Considered by many as the "Diving Capital of the World," John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park is the nation's first underwater park. Home to 55 varieties of coral and 600 species of tropical marine life, vegetation, and shore birds, nature lovers, snorkelers and scuba divers fall in love with this park! The park also features the Christ of the Abyss, an eight-and-a-half-foot, 4,000-pound bronze sculpture of Jesus Christ- all underwater!
Next, the temperatures, depths and sea conditions at Looe Key, make it a perfect place for divers and snorkelers of all skill levels! The reef is home to over 150 species of fish including yellowtail, angelfish, parrotfish, barracuda, sergeant majors, and even moray eel. Occasionally diver see various shark and ray species. About a decade ago, a special diving attraction was added about 3 miles west of Looe Key, called Adolphus Busch, which was sunk in 110 feet of water in December of 1998 as an artificial reef. This 210 foot long ship was well prepared for experienced advanced divers with large holes cut for swim throughs. Large Jewfish, some weighing as much as 400 lbs., live on the wreck and can be seen on many dives.
Lastly,
Panama City . Yes, it has a bit of a reputation for being a spring break haven, but if you can get past that (which, after all, is pretty much over for the season),
Panama City has some truly awesome activities for couples and families! Dolphins, Sea Turtles, and other wildlife are frequently seen off the coast, and divers have a lot of options to visit local reefs and attractions!

Winter the Bionic Dolphin
Winter Gets A New Tail
Two years ago Winter the dolphin was found in a crab trap off the coast of
Florida . Barely able to swim, she was hospitalized and let under 24-hour surveillance at the Clearwater Marine Aquarium, under the care of director David Yates.
Doctors were able to save her life, but her tail was lost during the process. After a time of uncertainty about her possible life, and lifespan, prosthetics developer Kevin Carroll, who has developed prosthetics for other animals, including an ostrich and a duck, offered his services to the Hospital.
No dolphin has ever lived, much less in captivity, without a tail, and there was a lot of uncertainty over whether or not Winter would be able to learn just how to use her new prosthetic.
After completing the design, Carroll stated, "Little did I know it was going to take a year and a half (to develop the prosthetic)…With a person, when we fit a socket we have one long, solid bone. We don't have to have the socket moving in every direction.”
But after everything Winter lived through, she did it! She may not be the most graceful dolphin in the water, but I’m willing to bet she’s the most grateful for her tail!

Long Board and Wake Board

Surf’s up!
It’s time again for wipeouts and radical moves! And what better venue to show off your skills than in one of our areas many surfing competitions!
The Florida Surfing Association’s Longboard Classic will be held Saturday May 24th at Jax Pier. And with $1000 at stake, the area’s best surfers are sure to come out and play!
Registration fees for the event are $25 per competition, and all age ranges will be included in the event. You are encouraged to register before the event, but same day event registration (with a late fee) will be available assuming space permits. If Wake Boarding is more your style, than get ready for June! The ‘Wake-n-skate’ will be held June 21stnd at the Okeeheelee Park in West Palm Beach. Amateur and Professional Wake boarders are encouraged to enter and participate and attendance is expected to be large, as marketing efforts have already begun, and there are expected to be at least 50-75 participants. There will also be giveaways, raffles, autograph signings and lots of other activities for those not entering in the contest. The competition is expected to last from 10am-6pm each day!
