USS North Carolina returns to Life
USS North Carolina Submarine
"Officers and crew of the USS North Carolina, man your ship, and bring her to life!"
With that statement, more than 140 sailors rushed aboard the newly commissioned USS North Carolina to take their place in history.
This is the first fast-attack nuclear submarine bearing
North Carolina ’s name in more than 60 years.
The submarine is headed to Pearl Harbor in
Hawaii . There she will join the U.S. Navy's Pacific fleet-Just as the previous USS North Carolina did in World War II.
The fourth Virginia-class submarine is built to perform covert and traditional naval operations. Displacing more than 7,800 tons and carrying enhanced stealth and surveillance capabilities she also has ability to strike on-shore targets with Tomahawk cruise missiles.
The first
North Carolina in the U.S. Navy, launched in 1820, was considered one of the most powerful vessels in the world. She served as the flagship of the U.S. Mediterranean and South American fleets until she was sold for scrap in 1867.
The second USS North Carolina cruised the
Middle East and participated in the first naval experiments using air power during World War I.
In 1923 President Warren G. Harding singed an arms-reduction treaty preventing the third USS North Carolina, which was under construction at the time, from ever setting sail.
In 1937, however, the fourth USS North Carolina was completed. She fought valiantly in every naval offensive in WWII. Despite all six Japanese claims to have sunk her, she survived and came back home after the war.
