Tragedy in Sydney Harbor
May 02 , 2008
Sydney Boating Accident Death Toll Rises to 6
Early Thursday morning, a fishing boat and a cabin cruiser collided in the
Sydney
Harbor , and has resulted in six deaths and eight injuries so far.

One of the victims, 25-year-old Jessica Holloway is from Texas, and was reportedly working in as a youth worker.
All victims were aboard the 23-foot half-cabin cruiser, which was licensed to carry eight people but had 14 aboard when the crash occurred. They ranged in age from late teen to early 30’s, and with the exception of Holloway, all were Australian.
Witnesses indicate the group took the boat out for a late-night tour of the harbor after drinking at a nearby hotel.
Police declined to speculate about the cause of the collision, but said alcohol, speed, and lighting would be investigated, as well as whether the victims were wearing lifejackets.
The crash occurred near the Bradley's Head area of the harbor, home to Sydney Opera House and
Sydney
Harbor
Bridge landmarks.
The owner of the cabin cruiser said they had not given anyone permission to take it out on Thursday morning. The company suspects a former contractor for the company may have taken the boat for a joyride as he was among the injured.
Let this be a reminder to think about safety while boating, and how boating and drinking- just as drinking and driving- are not a good combination! Use good sound judgement while enjoying yourself on the water, and remember that it is just as dangerous to boat, as it is to drive! Splashvision sends it condolences and prayers to the victims and their families.
