Dolphin to the rescue
April 30 , 2008

A Tale straight out of Flipper

Dolphin Rescues Whales

Moko the dolphin rescues two whales stranded on a beach in .

When two pygmy sperm whales had repeatedly beached on the coast of , conservationists feared they would have to euthanize the animals.

But then the dolphin appeared, seemingly spoke with the whales, and led them to safety far offshore.

The bottlenose dolphin, called Moko by local residents, is well known for playing with swimmers off Mahia beach on the east coast of the North Island .

Just when the rescue team was flagging, the dolphin showed up and made straight for them.

"I don't speak whale and I don't speak dolphin," Mr Smith told the BBC, "but there was obviously something that went on because the two whales changed their attitude from being quite distressed to following the dolphin quite willingly and directly along the beach and straight out to sea."

Mr Smith said he felt fortunate to have witnessed the extraordinary event, and was delighted for the whales, as in the past he has had to put down animals which have become beached.

He said that the whales have not been seen since, but that the dolphin had returned to its usual practice of playing with swimmers in the bay.

"I shouldn't do this I know, we are meant to remain scientific," Mr Smith said, "but I actually went into the water with the dolphin and gave it a pat afterwards because she really did save the day."

Fleet Week Arrives
April 29 , 2008

Fleet Week Fort Lauderdale 2008

Thunder Birds Fort Lauderdale 2007

While the Air and Sea Show may have been cancelled, Broward Navy Days has produced Fleet Week to honor the Navy, Marine and Coast Guard from April 28 - May 4, 2008.

Port Everglades is home this week for more than 2,500 Sailors, Marines, and Coast Guardsmen who will participate in a number of community outreach activities as well as simply enjoy South Florida all week long! Guardsmen will be in the community visiting hospitals, schools and working on a Habitat for Humanity project.

Guardsmen will also be participating in a Blood Drive competition, Golf tournaments and Intramural sports throughout the week! I’ve also heard rumors of an air show or display, but as of yet have not been able to find anything official…so, keep your eyes up and maybe we’ll get lucky!

Public visits to ships will not be allowed this year, due to security restrictions, but lucky viewers were able to watch the ships pull into Port the morning of April 28th.

If you missed the arrival of the first boats yesterday, you still have a chance to watch some more come in! All week long, vessels will be trickling in! If you want to try and catch some of the ships arriving, you have a couple of choices:

option a. South
Beach Park (1100 Seabreeze Boulevard in Fort Lauderdale) opens at 5 a.m. The beach and jetties are across A-1-A within walking distance.

option b. John Lloyd State Park, on the south side of the inlet, requires a small entrance fee and    offers a good view.

If you are going to be out in your own boat during Fleet Week, there are some things you need to remember: there is a 500-foot security zone around naval vessels in the area south of the 17th Street bridge. Traffic within those zones must slow to a no-wake speed, and no vessel can get closer than 100 yards to a naval vessel.

Because of the high number of high security vessels entering the Port, boaters will experience delays (sometimes significant)! So, pack your patience!

If you have time, make sure to go and pay tribute to the heroes of our Nation! Take some video while you’re at it and upload it to SplashVision to share with us who cannot attend this year!

At Ease! Or… That’s a wrap!

USCG Authorization Act 2008
April 28 , 2008

Coast Guard Authorization Act of 2008

Last week the House of Representatives approved the U.S. Coast Guard Authorization Act of 2008 with a narrow provision to provide targeted relief to the recreational marine servicing and repair industry, as well as to the entire recreational boating community.

Last summer, Florida’s U.S. House Representative Ron Klein and Representative Debbie Wasserman Schultz introduced the bill and last week they delivered on their commitment to help the recreational marine industry by getting it passed. The passage of this bill solidifies their stance as strong supporters and champions of one of the largest business sectors in their districts, which represents over 162,000 jobs and  $13.6 billion dollars to the Florida economy.

Upon passage of the Bill, Congressman Klein made the statement, “This legislation will have a real impact on small businesses and their employees in South Florida…The marine industry is a critical economic engine in our area, yet they are being hit hard in these difficult economic times. I am proud that by making a common-sense change, we can create jobs and save small businesses hundreds of thousands of dollars.”

So what exactly does this bill do?

- Results in additional jobs
- Encourages more competitive pay rates
- Provides resources to aid marine business retention
- Provides a complete exemption for the service and repair sector of the recreational boating    industry from the requirement for coverage under the Longshore and Harbor Workers' Compensation Act (LHWCA), as long as State workers' compensation coverage is in place
- Provides specific relief to manufacturers of recreational boats 165’ feet or under.

Do you have video of how this bill will affect you? Upload it to SplashVision today and tell the world your story!

That’s a wrap!
