The Oyster 49, designed by Rob Humphreys and the Oyster Design Team, is a natural successor to the successful Holman and Pye designed 485 and offers a slightly smaller alternative to the Oyster 53. From the design view point the Oyster 49 incorporates all the lessons learnt with the Oyster 56 and Oyster 53 projects that preceded her. This is not to say the 49 is simply a scaled down Oyster 53, since she is subtly different in design and character. True the 49 still features the ergonomically designed cockpit, first developed for the Oyster 56 in conjunction with the University of Loughborough Ergonomics department. it is also true that great emphasis has been placed on the cockpit and deck layout to give generous space for comfortable dining and relaxing. However, careful examination of the Oyster 49 deck reveals a number of sophisticated curves and contours, which blend subtly together to produce a really slick superstructure incorporating the Deck Saloon feature Oyster first brought to the world of cruising yachts well over 20 years ago. The hull of the 49 undoubtedly benefits from the development of her larger sisters, not forgetting that the Oyster 56 and 62 are already ARC and Antigua Sailing Week class winners.
