The United States Coast Guard has reported that a tanker lost steerage Thursday morning and ran aground in the Ambrose Channel, southeast of Staten Island.
The White Sea was traveling outbound from New York, carrying 455 thousand barrels of oil, according to Coast Guard Chief Bob Laura. The barrels are reportedly intact. In case of a breach in the hull, however, a boom has been deployed.
