After some hours shadowing a competitive group of six humpbacks, the males left the female and yearling calf alone and after several attempts I was able to film the two as they approached me several times, the yearling curious, the mother protective. The calf is almost the size of the mother and a lot fatter. And no wonder. The mother has been feeding the calf for a year and a bit and she's been starving in the Caribbean for the last few months. The water is fifty feet some five miles off Bermuda. I imagine the mother and calf are resting up in shallow water for protection and the mother may be hoping for some snacks before she continues up north.(less)
